Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic surgery that corrects sagging or drooping eyelids as well as bags and bulges around the eyes.   This conditions are not limited to older patients, as many people inherit such traits as fat pouches under the eyes at an early age. Excess skin is removed or occasionally by treated by laser resurfacing.  If excess fat is present, it can be removed simultaneously. The cosmetic surgeon is careful not to remove excessive fat to avoid creating a hollow look

The cosmetic surgeon makes incisions in the natural crease region of the lid and removing the excess tissue above this incision. This location for the incisions, coupled with the excellent healing capacity of the eyelid skin, almost always results in scars that are nearly impossible to see.  Through these incisions excess skin, fat or muscle are removed depending on the individual problem. The use of the surgical laser can help to minimize postoperative swelling and bruising.

When the issue in the lower lid is bulging fat without excess skin, the lower lid blepharoplasty is conveniently carried out through an incision made inside the lower eyelid.  This eliminates all visible scarring.  This cosmetic surgery is called a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. The cosmetic surgery can be combined with a chemical peel or laser resurfacing of the lower eyelid to help remove some of the lines in the lower eyelid skin. 

Most patients experience improvement in the appearance of their eyes. This is often includes a feeling of lightness in the eyelids. Bags and pouches are significantly reduced if not completely eliminated. Lines and "crow's feet" around the eyes are reduced by the operation. For those patients desiring correction of these lines, laser resurfacing, chemical peels or Botox may be used following recovery from the cosmetic surgery.
